Which Accidental Marketer  are you?

Inspired by the DISC profiling system, our Quiz is a fun way to learn how your personality influences your marketing so you can make more informed choices.

The Fab Four

There are four types of Accidental Marketers. Each one thinks about and approaches marketing differently.

You might be the one who thrives at a networking event, the one who is unphased by negative reviews, the one whose approach to sales is to build rapport and wait, or the one who is great at maintaining your marketing schedule.

Knowing your type will help you look at marketing decisions and experiences more objectively and not be caught on the hop if the world changes around you.

We're all a bit of a fruit salad. But one of these will be most like you. Don't worry - we've even developed a Quiz to help you make sure!

Dragonfruit

Your superpower is your incredible ability to get things done.

You are motivated more by marketing that achieves quick results than any other Accidental Marketer type.

Read moreDragonfruits are more focussed on tasks than people. You can see marketing as an essential investment or a cost. Either way, it’s about the bottom line and returns on investment for you. You might be frustrated by aspects of marketing you can’t easily measure or that take too long. This can make you too quick to dismiss or undervalue activities that could be good for you in the longer term, especially if they are more 'touchy feely' in nature.

You are more likely than other types to have identified and regularly monitor competitors. You may seek to copy or uncover the secrets to their success.

At a networking event, you tend to work the room and hand out business cards freely.

Your business development style is likely more that of 'hunter' and you probably like the challenge of making a new sale or cold-call prospecting. You like to 'win.'

You don't tend to be overly influenced by emotions and so can reject the subtle 'arts' of marketing which takes into account that logic isn't the only driver of decision-making and that different people need to hear different things.

Like your fruity counterpart, you can be prickly if someone doesn’t approach you in the right way. Your tough exterior carries you through the hurly-burly of business but protects a soft interior that you only show to a select few.

You are more likely than other types to sign up for courses and programs run by high-profile people who promise quick results. Take care to assess these on merit - these programs are designed to appeal to Dragonfruits like you!

Starfruit

Your superpower is your incredible ability to influence  others.

You are more spontaneous and unstructured in your marketing than any other Accidental Marketer type.

Read moreStarfruit are more focussed on people than tasks of marketing. You are probably comfortable using your profile to lift the profile of your business, and vice versa.

You tend to be drawn to 'shinier' aspects of marketing such as advertising campaigns, visual branding, networking and storytelling.

You are perceptive and can connect into emotion to create rapport and influence. You aren’t worried if results don't show straight away. You have charismatic qualities and have no problems speaking in public and connecting with your audience. This is why the Starfruit was chosen to represent you.

You might know who your competitors are but you might not invest a lot of energy into being as aware of them as you probably should.

Networking events were probably invented by a Starfruit! You tend to flit about the room and be the connector who keeps conversations going. Take care not to dominate conversations with your natural energy and enthusiasm though.

Your business development style is more likely that of 'sower'' and you probably prefer face to face and more organic sales experiences.

Like your fruity counterpart, you naturally stand out. So it can hurt if you feel you've been overlooked or made to feel invisible. You like to be liked.

You are more likely than other types to have radical ideas and you back yourself in. For this reason, one of your biggest marketing challenges is staying motivated if others don't share your excitment for the vision.

Keeping up with routine or maintenance tasks after the novelty has worn off can also be a challenge for you.

Hazelnut

Your superpower is your incredible ability to connect with others.

You are more reluctant to draw attention to yourself through marketing than any other Accidental Marketer type.

Read moreHazelnuts can see marketing as something they know they need to do but feel uncomfortable 'selling yourself.' It's not that you aren’t proud of your achievements and strengths, it's just more natural to direct your energy to affirm others.

You are empathetic to how other people feel and for this reason, you might have more affinity for 'story-telling' marketing areas. You are likely the person who comments on the posts of others on social media and are a natural volunteer. You might feel anxious if you’re called to speak in public without being able to prepare first but you can develop this skill.

You may or may not have competitors on your radar and you might have less structured ways of measuring marketing impact than other types.

You can be sociable and are genuinely interested in people, so networking events might feel superficial because you like to spend more time learning about people than they allow.

Your business development style is likely more that of 'farmer' and you probably feel most comfortable with upselling than making the initial sale.

Like your real-life counterpart which develops within a soft protective skin, you may find it harder than other types not to take negative feedback from customers or clients to heart.

Because relationships matter to you, your biggest marketing challenge might just be having the courage to walk away from unproductive or unhealthy business relationships before they cost you your peace of mind.

Pear

Your superpower is your incredible ability to look from many angles.

You are more attuned to planning and analysing data than any other Accidental Marketer type.

Read morePears can see marketing as something that ‘has to be done.' You may be more interested in the information you gather in the process than the activity itself or even the people involved.

You are analytical and good at spotting patterns. For this reason, you are likely the best of all types in tracking your marketing impact. You may prefer to communicate by email so you can organise your thoughts and facts. The thought of public speaking probably may make you feel uncomfortable.

You likely know who your competitors are. You may however underestimate them because you can overlook the value of activities that are not transactional, such as relationship management and things related to 'people'.

Pears might find networking events tricky. You are more likely to seek out people you already know and stay put if you can than work the room. Your business development style is likely more that of 'gatherer' and you prefer following methodical sales approaches and processes to pursue obvious opportunties rather than spontaneously persue nebulous ideas.

Like your fruity counterpart that pairs well with almost anything (see what we did there?), your knack for analysis can ground your marketing efforts, particularly if you recognise the role of emotion as a key driver of purchase.

Your biggest marketing challenges include paralysis by analysis (you may may overstate the risks or consequences of making mistakes), or moving too slowly because you need to make sure you have all the facts first.

It's good for you to know and remember that emotion plays a bigger role in decision-making than you might give it credit for.
